Red Runneth Over

So nice to finally have a finish and popped this quilt in the washer and then into the dryer as I was anxious to get the crinkly, antique look.  Didn't give it a second thought (or look) before drying, and rats, one of the red fabrics bled, despite prewashing the fabric!!

Will try washing it again with a color catcher and see if the red comes out.  My daughter, Jamie, told me not to worry, it just makes the quilt look more antique.  Bless her...  I'm happy with the echo quilting in the borders - boy did it take a long time though!  Thanks for any suggestions you have on getting the red out.
I'm happy to report that the color catchers worked like a dream and the red came out!  Thank you all for your suggestions!  -Dixie

Its a very pretty quilt! That is so frusterating about that red. I don't have any suggestions but let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Wonderful quilt..I've never had colors run but I wonder if soaking it with one of the quilters products that you add to take excess dye out when you prewash reds would lift that out and take any additional excess out. I would dry flat and put a white piece of fabric on some of the red areas to test if still bleeding. Just not sure if the dryer set the colors. Good Luck!

Here is a tip that I've used a couple of times now .... take your colour catcher sheet and baste it (the more the sheet is basted the better) directly over the area where the fabric has bleed outs .... wash again (perhaps a couple of times but let it dry between washes) and the colour catcher will start to absorb the excess dye and will actually pull more dye out of the block so that future washings won't bleed out.

I pre-wash my fabrics too, but sometimes a fabric just wants to have some mischief.

Gorgeous quilt!

I made a red and white quilt once. Pre-washed each fabric. When I finished quilting and binding the quilt it was time to wash it... Yes, some of the reds bled. I almost died! I called a friend who suggested I re-wash the quilt in Era. (I think it's still on the market. It's just a liquid laundry detergent.) It worked. You might try it. Good luck.

I love it a lot! The colour combo is a favourite of mine. You have some good suggestios there for thr rogue red. The sam thing happened to me on a white quilt. It came out with using a dylon product.

I have had the same thing happen when using red in a quilt. Love the yellow with the red. The whole quilt pops.

I must tell you, that is one stunning quilt. I love the colors! Could you kindly tell me what fabric the yellow is? I hope the fugitive red comes out, but don't let it spoil the quilt for you, because it is gorgeous. Michele

I love it! I would defintely try to wash it again with a couple of color catchers. Even if I prewash my reds I throw one in when I was the whole quilt.

Wow, I am really impressed the color catcher worked. I have two small quilts that I washed recently and both had some reds bleed. I always pre-wash fabrics but don't test for bleeding. I did turn a couple of things pink once when I through some reds in with a load of whites. Oops.

I have always loved this quilt and it's been on my 'to do' list for a long while. You have done such a great job,so pretty. Red is a pesky dye sometimes. I prewash but on one quilt the red has run everytime I have washed it until the quilter's muslin eventually became a 'nice' even pink! I gave up and now I don't mind it so much with the navy and red in the rest of the quilt!:( Good luck!
